Spinalonga
Island - Plaka
Spinalonga island-known also as "island of tears"-is a famous
ancient fortress built to protect "Olous"-an ancient town
of eastern Crete. In 1574 the fortress was rebuilted and Spinalonga was
a refuge to Christians under threat from the
pirates - it was also used by the Turks during Turkish domination. But
Spinalonga is very famous for becoming a leper
colony in 1903 until the end of '50's. The island is full of houses that
the leper's community was using - and visitors
have a great chance to explore the area, usually with the presence of
a well informed guide. Also the small fishing
village of Plaka being opposite is a perfect place for relaxing, swimming
in crystal, clear waters and tasting the famous
cretan cuisine! Lato hotel in Agios Nikolaos is a good starting point
to explore the whole area - not just the island
but also the route from the town to Elounda and Plaka - a route full of
excellent views of Mirabello bay! |
